5 Dec 2013 - DMISA HONOURS TATA MADIBA
DMISA HONOURS TATA MADIBA - FATHER OF A NATION AND BUILDER OF RESILIENCE
On Thursday 5 December 2013 Nelson Mandela, first democratically elected president of the Republic of South Africa, passed away. The Disaster Management Institute of South Africa mourns the passing of a great man who changed the world, inspired millions and leaves a legacy of reconciliation and understanding. Of particular interest to the Institute and its members is the way in which Madiba focused on the youth, education and poverty alleviation, the building blocks of a resilient society that can anticipate, reduce and effectively deal with disaster.
We hope to draw strength from his tenacity and passion for human dignity as we constantly reflect on improving our practice of disaster risk management. DMISA resonates the words of wisdom shared by Nelson Mandela at his Inaugural address in Pretoria (May 10, 1994);
‘Out of the experience of an extraordinary human disaster that lasted too long, must be born a society of which all humanity will be proud.’
We bid you a fond farewell, Tata Madiba, and we pledge our continued and unwavering commitment to freedom, justice, social cohesion, reconciliation and building resilient communities!
